Honda sees sharp drop in profit on Thai floods (AP)

TOKYO ? Battered by the strong yen and supply disruptions from Thailand's floods, Honda said Tuesday that its net earnings in the October-December quarter tumbled 41 percent to 47.6 billion yen ($625 million) and projected a sharply lower full-year profit.

It's been a tough year for the Japanese automobile and motorcycle maker. Honda had just begun to recover from the March earthquake and tsunami, which damaged some of its suppliers, when Thailand's worst floods in 50 years swamped its vehicle assembly plant in Ayutthaya, north of Bangkok.

That disaster dealt such a blow to Honda that it scrapped its earnings forecast when it last reported earnings results in October.

Now Honda predicts its net profit for the fiscal year through March would drop nearly 60 percent to 215 billion yen.

Honda Motor Co., which makes the Accord sedan and Odyssey minivan, stopped making cars at its Thai plant in October, and said in a statement Tuesday that it was making progress draining the factory and cleaning up equipment, and expected production to resume there at the end of March.

The flooding also disrupted the output at many Honda suppliers in Thailand, forcing it to reduce production as far away as the U.S. and Canada. Honda said production in neighboring Asian countries interrupted by the problems in Thailand was expected to return to normal by April.

All told, the problems related to flooding in Thailand have cost the company 260,000 vehicles in lost production worldwide, according to Tomohiro Okada, a company spokesman.

The company said it is working with the local industrial park to build water protection walls around the plant and will make requests of the Thai government to take steps to prevent the risk of flooding in the future. The Thai plant makes the Jazz, Civic, Accord, CR-V sports utility vehicle and other vehicles.

The Thai flooding affected many other Japanese companies, reflecting the increasingly interconnected nature of today's global economy. Toshiba Corp. on Tuesday cited the disaster as one reason behind the 10.6 billion yen net loss it reported for the most recent quarter.

A bright spot for Honda was its motorcycle business, which is booming in emerging markets. Motorcycle sales rose 6.3 percent during the quarter from the same quarter a year ago to nearly 3.1 million units.

Quarterly sales slid 8 percent during the fiscal third quarter to 1.942 trillion yen. The company projects full-year sales will decline 12.2 percent to 7.85 trillion yen.

The strong yen, which erodes exporters' foreign earned income when repatriated, also ate into the company's income.

Global vehicle sales in the quarter declined 2.9 percent from a year ago to 830,000 units, the company said. Vehicle sales in Japan rose 16 percent and North America increased 2 percent from the same quarter a year ago, while unit sales in Europe, Asia and other regions fell.

Bearing a birthday cake and a bag of Cheetos, Romney talks to reporters on his plane (The Ticket)

(Charles Dharapak/AP)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.?For seven days, Mitt Romney has not held a press availability to talk to the reporters following him, so when he finally made the trek Monday back to the rear of his campaign plane where reporters sit, he came bearing a gift.

Inching tentatively down the aisle like a bride in search of a groom, Romney carried a red and white sheet cake, with two lit candles in the shape of a "3" and a "4," marking the 34th birthday of Los Angeles Times reporter Maeve Reston.

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you," he sang a bit awkwardly as he shuffled down the aisle. His kept his eyes on the cake, which kept nearly slipping out of his hands. Dozens of cameras?still and video?filmed his every move as reporters crowded in the aisle and over seats to get a good look at the candidate.

Reaching Reston, Romney didn't quite know what to do. "Plates? A knife?" he said, looking back a bit anxiously at his senior aides, who wore smiles like proud parents on their child's first day of kindergarten.

"Maybe we'll save it for after lunch?" he finally said, setting the cake on a nearby tray table. Looking as though he needed something to do, he grabbed a basket of chips and began tossing them at reporters, hitting at least one photographer in the head.

"Why do you have chips?" someone asked.

Romney looked down and grabbed a bag. "Cheetos, I like Cheetos," he said. Picking up a bag of sour cream and onion potato chips, he said, "I had these yesterday." He cast a bag of Pop Chips aside, before grabbing his Cheetos and trying to make a run for it to the front of the cabin.

But Reston stopped him and asked how he was feeling ahead of Florida's primary Tuesday. "Good, good. Good crowds, enthusiasm," Romney said, fiddling with the bag of Cheetos. "You never know until it's actually over what's going to happen."

Motioning to Reston, Romney laughed. "Look at her, on her birthday, she's going to try and get some questions in," he said. "It's not exclusive though, you must admit."

But, Romney continued, "It feels good at this point. In South Carolina, the crowds were good, but you could sense it wasn't going our way."

In Florida, it feels like it's "getting better and better everyday," he said. It isn't just the large crowds he's been getting?including more than 1,000 in Naples on Sunday?but rather the "folks you talk to after the rallies," he said, including organizers and activists who have been telling him what's happening on the ground in the state.

Within a few minutes, the plane's engine began to roar to life, and Romney took his cue. "Thanks guys," he said, and headed back up to his seat on the second row of the plane, Cheetos in hand.

Translation Of Internal Experiences & Communications | Submit ...

In at this time?s world economy, it isn?t solely trade that?s international. It is the businesses and their employees too. Due to this fact it is more and more common to have companies with quite a lot of languages spoken within the divisions. So perhaps we should always anticipate that translation of inner studies and communications is an everyday prevalence?

I have labored at some fairly massive international corporations and from my very own experience most companies haven?t adapted to the language wants of the company. In fact most have not localized and translated their mission statement.

What seems to happen is both: 1) the corporate informally states that there?s a single core language of the corporate and due to this fact the interpretation of internal reports and communications isn?t required. 2) An internal effort is made to ?translate? info on an as requested basis.

Allow us to contemplate these in turn: Single Language Firm ? Trying to fake that you?ve got a single language company when you don?t, is a ?head within the sand? approach. This may lead to among the following points: 1) Alienation of staff and divisions. 2) Employees turnover ? Along with (1) the career observe of an employee will likely be linked to their skill to speak the core language reasonably then whether they are the most effective individual for the job. three) Poorly communicated objectives. If the objective shouldn?t be absolutely understandable by all concerned, then how can you expect an a hundred% achievement of the target? 4) Lack of a common enterprise culture.

Inner Translation ? Internal translation is definitely higher than no translation at all. However this has its personal potential issues: 1) Is the translator capable? 2) Are all the documents translated? And are they translated in time? If the interpretation of inside reports and communications is a secondary task, does the interpretation always get carried out on time? / at all?! 3) Confidentiality ? Jungle drums (informal communications) all the time beat strongly inside a company. I have seen that some duties are more confidential when carried out externally. four) Is the interior translation carried out at the expense of time spent on another core exercise or objective?

When you consider the price of high quality you must contemplate the costs of not having quality. I believe that the price of translating inside documentation needs to be thought-about similarly. For some organizations the problem of translating inner experiences shall be much less essential then for others.

But when such translation is important, maybe the price is decrease then first thought? Routine report translations is an activity common sufficient to warrant extra detailed dialogue with the translation company and may enable pricing agreements which can be under what is attainable for advert hoc translation projects.

Beijing air pollution soars with fireworks smoke

(AP) ? Clouds of smoke from Lunar New Year fireworks sent air pollution readings soaring in the more sensitive measurement system Beijing started using a little more than a week ago, reports said Sunday.

Readings of fine particulate matter called PM2.5 reached 1.593 milligrams per cubic meter on the Jan. 22 eve of the holiday, about 100 times worse than the amount considered good for 24-hour exposure, the city's environmental bureau said.

The reading drew wide publicity in the local media on Sunday. The popular Beijing Youth Daily praised the city government for taking a more critical look at air pollution, while urging residents to consider the environmental effects of setting off fireworks.

The readings moderated under relatively clear skies in recent days. By noon Sunday, before the weeklong holiday ends and people return to work, the level stood at a relatively good 0.039.

Beijing is frequently cloaked in yellow haze that obscures buildings a couple of blocks away. On particularly bad days, schools cancel outdoor activities and hospitals treat more people ? particularly the elderly ? for respiratory complaints.

The city began measuring the small particles in the air and releasing the readings on Jan. 21, as concern has grown over Beijing's air pollution from all sources. PM2.5 ? particles less than 2.5 micrometers in size, or about 1/30th the width of an average human hair ? are believed to be the greatest health risk because their smallness means they can lodge deeply in the lungs.

Beijing previously had only given PM10 measurements of coarser particles, which indicated pollution was "light," leading to accusations the true extent of the problem was hidden.

The U.S. Embassy since last year has released PM2.5 readings from a device on its rooftop and some residents have tested the air in their neighborhoods and posted the results online.

The embassy measured more pollution than the city on Sunday, but the sampling stations are 10 miles apart or more.

Beijing says its PM2.5 measuring station is about 4 miles (7 kilometers) west of central Tiananmen Square.

SAG Awards menu is months in the making (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? When your dinner party guests include Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Kate Winslet and Glenn Close, and the whole affair is televised live, it can take months to plan the menu. That's why the team behind the Screen Actors Guild Awards began putting together the plate for Sunday's ceremony months ago.

It was still summer when show producer Kathy Connell and director Jeff Margolis first sat down with chef Suzanne Goins of Los Angeles eatery Lucques with a tall order: Create a meal that is delicious at room temperature, looks beautiful on TV, is easy to eat and appeals to Hollywood tastes. Oh, and no poppyseeds, soups, spicy dishes, or piles of onions or garlic.

"It can't drip, stick in their teeth or be too heavy," Connell said. "We have to appease all palates."

The chef put together a plate of possibilities: Slow-roasted salmon with yellow beets, lamb with cous cous and spiced cauliflower and roasted root vegetables with quinoa. There was also a chopped chicken salad and another chicken dish with black beans.

To ensure the dishes are both tasty and TV-ready, Connell and Margolis, along with the show's florist and art director, dined together at this summertime lunch on tables set to replicate those that will be in the Shrine Exposition Center during the ceremony. The pewter, crushed-silk tablecloths and white lilies you'll see on TV Sunday were also chosen months ago.

The diners discussed the look of the plate, the size of the portions and the vegetarian possibilities.

"We'd like the portions a little larger," Connell told the chef.

"And a little more sauce on the salmon," Margolis added.

Come Sunday, it's up to Goins to prepare 1,200 of the long-planned meals for the A-list audience.

I could go for the guitarist of Next Oktober, but I have a question. Would you classify them as metal? I'm not familiar with either of the bands used as examples.

Also, would it be okay to have a two lead-guitarist setup switching off on leads?

I would consider them metal, I suppose. What bands are you familiar with so that I might explain it better?

Different people have different views on what is metal.

Well, I listen to anything from Mot?rhead and Judas Priest to Megadeth and Slayer, Nile and Death, Suffocation, Carcass. Basically all kinds of metal, heavy metal, thrash metal, death metal, deathgrind, grindcore, so on, besides metalcore and nu metal :v

o.o Oh my. xD Well, they aren't really metal like that, I don't think. I've listened to some Slayer and Megadeth before and from what I've seen...they aren't really the same thing.

I dunno. I'd really like to get in on this (there are WAY too few band RPs on this site and I just love band RPs) and I can provide a very detailed and (I like to think, lest I come off as a pompous douche) deep character, but I kinda loathe metalcore and nu metal so I couldn't possibly take part in a band RP where the band is either of those XD

Former Astronaut Mark Kelly Attends Obama's State of the Union Address (SPACE.com)

Retired NASA astronaut Mark Kelly and his wife, Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, were among the high profile attendees at U.S. President Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday (Jan. 24) in Washington, D.C.

Kelly, who commanded NASA's second-to-last space shuttle mission last year, sat with First Lady Michelle Obama during the president's speech. He watched from the First Lady's box as Giffords received a standing ovation, a stirring show of support from her colleagues, when she arrived.?

Giffords suffered a gunshot wound to the head on Jan. 8, 2011 during an assassination attempt in Tucson, just months before Kelly's spaceflight.?She announced her plan to retire from Congress earlier this week.?

As President Obama approached the podium to deliver tonight's State of the Union address, he stopped to give Giffords a warm welcome. The two were all smiles as they embraced and rocked back and forth amid more applause. [Photos: Astronaut Mark Kelly & Gabrielle Giffords]

"Thankful to be watching tonight's #SOTU address next to @MichelleObama. Gabby's attendance will be a proud moment for all of us," Kelly write in a Twitter post.?"Wonderful to see my wife Gabby w/her colleagues at the #SOTU?I continued to be amazed by her. #Strong."

Giffords made a miraculous recovery and was even able to attend her husband's launch, on NASA's 134th space shuttle flight aboard the shuttle Endeavour, in May 2011.It was the final flight of the space shuttle Endeavour.?

Kelly?officially retired from NASA?and the U.S. Navy in June 2011. Vice President Joe Biden attended Kelly's retirement ceremony in Washington. Giffords announced on Jan. 22 that she will step down from office to focus on her health and rehabilitation.

"I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona I will?step down this week," Giffords said in a video message posted on her Facebook website. "Arizona is my home, always will be. A lot has happened over the past year; we cannot change that. But I know, on the issues we fought for, we can change things for the better: jobs, border security, veterans. We can do so much more by working together."

During his State of the Union address, Obama did not mention NASA or his vision for deep space exploration of asteroids and Mars, but he did emphasize the need for innovation to remain competitive in the fields of science and technology.

Obama's speech came one day after?Republican presidential debates?took place in Florida, where candidates Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich made statements that called for a leaner NASA and more support for private space industry initiatives.

Bill Gates on Using His Money to Save Lives and Fix U.S. Schools, and Steve Jobs (Newsmakers)

By Bill Weir

For the moment, Bill Gates is no longer the world's wealthiest man.

But he didn't lose the title to Mexico's telecom titan Carlos Slim; he gave it away. And as a result, the businessman-turned-philanthropist can point to a different kind of scoreboard.

"Well, it's easiest to measure in the health work," Gates told me, "where over 5 million lives have been saved."

In a wide-ranging interview with Yahoo! and ABC News, the former head of Microsoft talked about how Steve Jobs' death affected him, his fix for American schools and his annual letter, which sets the priorities for one of the most generous charitable efforts in history.

With a pledge to give away 95 percent of Gates' personal wealth, the Gates Foundation claims to have granted more than $26 billion since 1994. While some of that money is devoted to improving U.S. education, roughly 75 percent goes to the poorest countries in the world, and Gates scoffs at the idea that the money would be better spent at home.

"Well, the question is, are human lives of equal value?" Gates said. "For the mother whose child dies in Africa, is that somehow less important, less painful? If we can save that life -- for very little [money], is that appropriate to do? And, in fact, we know that if we do save those lives, it can reduce the population growth. It can let them be on a path to graduate from receiving aid."

After the Gates Foundation's vaccination efforts in India, that nation reported only one case of polio last year. And while the foundation promises to fight on against preventable diseases, the top focus of this year's letter is agriculture and Gates' belief that without technology, farmers could never feed the world's exploding population.

He calls for further research into the creation of flood-and-drought-resistant crops through genetic engineering.

"It is hard to overstate how valuable it is to have all the incredible tools that are used for human disease to study plants," he writes. But the idea of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, is loaded with controversy. Environmental groups worry that the practice could upset the food chain, leading to the spread of disease, "superweeds" and mutant insects. Switzerland, Peru and Ecuador are among the handful of countries that have banned the cultivation of GMOs.

To the dismay of GMO opponents, public records reveal that the Gates Foundation recently spent $27 million to buy 500,000 shares of Monsanto, the agribusiness giant with labs devoted to improving on nature to boost crop yields. And while Gates avoids the words "genetically modified" in his letter, he defends the idea when pressed.

"Over time, yes, countries will need to look at specific GMO products like they look at drugs today, where they don't approve them all. They look hard at the safety and the testing. And they make sure that the benefits far outweigh any of the downsides."

Aside from the environmental concerns, England's Prince Charles was among those who blamed a rash of farmer suicides in India on the higher cost of GMO seeds. But Gates insisted that his foundation's partners are not out to exploit developing nations.

"There's absolutely no payments, no royalties of any kind. It's just like in medicines. ... We go to the big companies who don't expect to make profits from the poorest billion and say: 'Will you help us?' And so they donate it."

Back in America, Gates is renewing his push toward "peer-reviewed" teaching as the key to reforming education. Since the best -- and worst -- teachers often operate in a bubble, he suggests training an elite group to roam from class to class to share what works and what doesn't.

"You take at least 2 percent of the teachers, train them very well and have them do structured visitations," he said. "And they tell the teacher, 'OK, you were good at this, but you didn't engage these kids very well. You didn't create discussion here. You didn't explain why a kid would wanna know this thing,' and help those teachers improve."

And Gates also reflected on the passing of Steve Jobs. Weeks before the Apple founder died, Gates paid an unannounced visit to the home of his sometime friend and longtime rival.

"He and I always enjoyed talking. He would throw some things out, you know, some stimulating things. We'd talk about the other companies that have come along. We talked about our families and how lucky we'd both been in terms of the women we married. It was great relaxed conversation.

How did Jobs' death affect him? "Well, it's very strange to have somebody who's so vibrant and made such a huge difference and been ... kind of a constant presence, to have him die," Gates said. "It makes you feel like, 'Wow, we're getting old.' I hope I still have quite a bit of time for the focus I have now, which is the philanthropic work. And there's drugs we're investing in now that won't be out for 15 years -- malaria eradication, I need a couple of decades here to fulfill that opportunity. But, you know, it reminds you that you gotta pick important stuff, because you only have a limited time."

BeagleBone board boots up XBMC Eden, shows off its media prowess

BeagleBone XBMC
BeagleBoard isn't letting the Raspberry Pi steal all the glory in the battle for low-cost computing supremacy. The $35 ARM11-based Pi may win on price, but at least the BeagleBone can hold its own in terms of power. After the Model B was demoed pushing XBMC and AirPlay capabilities, some intrepid devs managed to get the second beta of Eden up and running on the ARM A8 dev board. The vid stutters a bit during playback but, overall, it's a respectable performance considering this is a CPU that would get laughed out of most modern smartphones. Head on after the break to see it in action.

Gingrich's South Carolina Win, Through the Lens of a GOP Voter (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | LEXINGTON, S.C. -- For voters who weathered the wind and rain of afternoon thunderstorms, South Carolinians delivered a surprising victory on Saturday to Newt Gingrich.

A surprise indeed, to this Palmetto State resident. And in true Carolina fashion, residents of the "First in The South" primary election, have sent a clear message to the White House. Now whether that message means a Republican victory this November, or a groundhog type shadow that forecasts another four years of an Obama winter will remain to be seen, despite South Carolina's claim of "electing presidents."

Perhaps the most astonishing element of Newt Gingrich's victory, is the propelling momentum brought into this election by opponent, and poll front runner, Mitt Romney. Although not a supporter, I was assured of a Romney victory going into this Primary, based solely on Romney's conservatism and religious views which I thought were on par with the political views of this State. Even with public endorsements by both former candidate Jon Huntsman, and South Carolina's Gov. Nikki Haley, Romney failed to sway voters as he did in Iowa and New Hampshire. Haley even referred to Romney, on her Facebook profile, as a "Jobs President," who will be "a great partner to South Carolina."

With so many polling stations throughout the state reporting light voter turnout, I feel that the South Carolina GOP has only tarnished this election by moving the primary forward several months, to an uncommon Saturday polling. And in doing so, the South Carolina GOP has produced a candidate I will not support later this year.

Why? Because a Gingrich win, in November, would show a weakness within America. I believe Gingrich's past marital problems, the 1998 ethics violations, and reprimands sanctioned to him by our own Congress, render a candidate who would serve only to insult America on the world front.

The Obama administration promised "changes" four years ago, which have been delivered as promised, much to the chagrin of this nation. And now, South Carolinians have responded by voting for someone at the opposite end of the spectrum. Someone who's reputation reminds me fully of a former president.

I say to Florida and the remainder of the country, choose your candidate carefully. A vote for one of the other candidates may seem uncomfortable at first, as it did for this previously undecided voter, but when examined as many facts as I could stand, I arrived at one conclusion. All the candidates have made embellished campaign promises, but there are only two I believe can deliver the results American need to recover from a cold Obama winter. We may not fully trust any of the GOP candidates, but a choice must be made. Either way we are stuck between a rock and a hard place. This country needs another "change" in the White House. Now, do we really want to put another George W Bush back in the Oval office? The people of South Carolina have spoken.

Mexican cleric: criminals should respect pope trip (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? A Mexican archbishop is asking criminals not to hurt people traveling to see Pope Benedict XVI during his first visit to the country.

Archbishop Jose Guadalupe Martin Rabago says he is confident that drug-cartel members will respect his call Sunday not to abuse worshippers and cause sorrow and death. He oversees the diocese of Leon, which the pope will visit.

Martin Rabago told reporters that the pope's trip will bring "times of peace and grace." The pope will arrive in Leon on March 23. The area has not seen the levels of drug violence other states have, but has seen some attacks on highways, which Martin Rabago mentioned in his comments.

Multiple partners not the only way for corals to stay cool

Saturday, January 21, 2012

Recent experiments conducted at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) produced striking results, showing for the first time that corals hosting a single type of "zooxanthellae" can have different levels of thermal tolerance ? a feature that was only known previously for corals with a mix of zooxanthellae.

Zooxanthellae are algal cells that live within the tissue of living coral and provide the coral host with energy; the relationship is crucial for the coral's survival. Rising ocean temperatures can lead to the loss of zooxanthellae from the coral host, as a consequence the coral loses its tissue colour and its primary source of energy, a process known as 'coral bleaching'. Globally, coral bleaching has led to significant loss of coral, and with rising ocean temperatures, poses a major threat to coral reefs.

It was previously known that corals hosting more than one type of zooxanthellae could better cope with temperature changes by favouring types of zooxanthellae that have greater thermal tolerance. However, until now it was not known if corals hosting a single type of zooxanthellae could have different levels of thermal tolerance.

Results recently published in the prestigious scientific journal, Nature Climate Change, showed corals that only host a single type of zooxanthellae may in fact differ in their thermal tolerance. This finding is important because many species of coral are dominated by a single type of zooxanthellae.

PhD student, Ms Emily Howells from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (CoECRS) at James Cook University, Townsville, together with scientists from AIMS and CoECRS, collected two populations of a single type of zooxanthellae (known as C1) from two locations on the Great Barrier Reef. The population collected from Magnetic Island near Townsville experiences average ocean temperatures 2?C higher than the population collected from the Whitsunday Islands. In experiments at AIMS, young corals were treated with one or other of the two different populations of zooxanthellae, and exposed to elevated water temperatures, as might occur during bleaching events.

The results were striking. Corals with zooxanthellae from the warmer region coped well with higher temperatures, staying healthy and growing rapidly, whilst corals with zooxanthellae from the cooler region suffered severe bleaching (loss of the zooxanthellae) and actually reduced in size as they partly died off.

Madeleine van Oppen, ARC Future Fellow at AIMS, says the research results will likely have a major impact on the field, as until now corals associating with the same type of zooxanthellae have been viewed as physiologically similar, irrespective of their geographical location.

"Our research suggests that populations of a single type of zooxanthellae have adapted to local conditions as can be seen from the remarkably different results of the two populations used in this study. If zooxanthellae populations are able to further adapt to increases in temperature at the pace at which oceans warm, they may assist corals to increase their thermal tolerance and survive into the future." says Emily Howells.

"However, we do not yet know how fast zooxanthellae can adapt, highlighting an important area of future research", says Bette Willis, Professor from the CoECRS at James Cook University.

Research at AIMS is therefore currently assessing whether zooxanthellae can continue to adapt to increasing temperatures and at what rate. This work in progress will provide insights into the capacity of zooxanthellae to adapt to future climate change.

CameraBag 1.93 (for iPhone)

CameraBag 1.93 (for iPhone) ($1.99) is largely the same as version 1.4 of the app, which I reviewed in 2008, with some modest enhancements. On the upside, it now has 16 filters (up from 10 in CameraBag 1.4), it?s more stable, supports higher-resolution images, and lets you e-mail images from within the app. The downsides are that it still doesn?t let you adjust the images, and there?s no integration with social media. CameraBag is a solid and fun app, if one that's behind the curve, expecially when compared with newcomers like Instagram (free, 3 stars).

Other photo apps, such as Camera Genius ($1.99, 3.5 stars) and Camera+ ($1.99, 3 stars) now offer not only creative filters but shooting aids like timers and burst mode, and the ability to tweak contrast, saturation. Most can also upload images to Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, or their own online galleries. But CameraBag still has its place, and will appeal to those who crave a simple way to fancy up their iPhone photos.

CameraBag lets you transform your photos to resemble vintage photographic styles simply by clicking on the appropriate filter. Photo buffs will find it does a creditable job of imitating historical photo techniques, and even those who just want to spruce up their iPhone images should enjoy experimenting with this app. If you want to edit your photos, or upload them to social media or photo-sharing sites, though, you?ll have to use other tools.

Operating CameraBag is simple. When you open the program, you see a dark screen with four icons at the bottom: snap a picture, email an image, save an image, or load an image from your iPhone's photo library. This is actually a plus over some of the newer apps, which only let you manipulate photos taken within the app. After you select or shoot a picture, the name of the last-used filter appears above the image, such as Colorcross or Infrared.

Vintage-Style Filters

By tapping on the filter name, you get a list of all 16 filters. Their one-word names, such as Plastic, Fisheye, and 1974, give a clue as to the filter's nature. Tapping a name selects the corresponding filter. Shoot a fresh picture or import one from the photos stored on your iPhone, and a thumbnail of the image with filter applied appears in the center of the screen. Swiping a finger across the screen advances to the next filter, so if you keep swiping, you can see the image with all of the effects applied in turn.

The information icon at the screen?s top-left lets you access a Photo Options menu lets you save the original photo (if you?re shooting images from within the app), use borders or cropping (which, when enabled, are automatically applied when appropriate to a particular filter), and turn filters off so they don?t appear when you're swiping through the thumbnails. You can see the provenance for Instagram in some of this.

The filters themselves cover a wide range of styles, from professional and specialized techniques (Magazine, Fisheye, Infrared) to consumer snapshots (1974, Instant) and toy cameras (Plastic). Every photo is an opportunity to experiment, and you can't be quite sure in advance which filters will work best on a particular image without trying each of them.

Helga and Lolo mimic the pictures taken with the Holga and Lomo hobbyist cameras with similar names. These cameras have cult followings both despite and because of their significant optical flaws, which can create unusual effects. The filter names are slight variations on the camera names, presumably to avoid infringing on the camera companies' trademarks.

Helga produces significant vignetting (a reduction in brightness at the edges of photos, particularly in the corners), while Lolo pictures appear oversaturated, often to the point of garishness. Helga generally didn't appeal to me. Lolo's high saturation, on the other hand, detracted from many indoor shots and portraits, but it nicely enhanced some outdoor scenes. It was particularly good at twilight shots, for which it really punched up the color and brightness of the sky and city lights. Both Helga and Lolo crop images to a square format, as the cameras they're modeled after do.

Cinema crops images to widescreen format. This is good if the images were taken in landscape orientation, but it lops off much of the top and bottom of portrait-mode images. Not the most exciting filter.

Colorcross provides vivid yet hazy, darkroom-style colors, while Plastic oversaturates colors, usually reds and yellows. Mono provides good, balanced black-and-white images while 1962 produces high-contrast monochrome images reminiscent of that era. Silver evokes the early days of photography, with a silvery blue (and sometimes yellow) tint. Magazine provides rich tones, while Italiano gives the images a mild, sepia tint and adds a trace of vignetting. Lightleak adds a streak of brightness across the image.

The 1974 effect reproduces the style of the day's photos by rendering color images with a slightly yellowish tinge that I generally found warm and cheery. And, as you'd expect, Fisheye distorts images as though they were shot through a fisheye lens, while Infrared mimics the result you'd get shooting through an infrared filter. I liked the ghostly, negative-like look of many of the Infrared images I created. Fisheye works best in shots of overarching branches, tall buildings from below, or funhouse portraits.

The Instant mode provides wide-bordered Polaroid-style snapshots?though you won't experience the anticipation of watching the image slowly materialize on film. Original lets you save the image unchanged, even if you just shot it from within CameraBag.

CameraBag lets you choose between 4 settings for image size (width of 600, 800, or 1,200 pixels, or full size). Even at full size, saving an image is relatively fast (about 4 seconds).

A Little Too Retro

Whether you're a photography buff or just want to spruce up your iPhone photos, you're sure to have fun producing many intriguing versions of your iPhone images with CameraBag. Experimenting with the app is an adventure: Before you apply a filter, you never know quite what you're going to get. Some of your variations created with these retro filters may even look better than your original.

But speaking of retro, CameraBag just hasn?t kept up with the times: Many iPhone photo apps are more full-featured. Camera Genius lets you upload images directly to Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter, while Camera+ includes those services while adding Picasa and Tumblr to the mix. Camera Genius offers a wider range of filters, including many vintage ones, while Camera+ provides 27 different effects. They let you fine-tune your images, as do both Photoshop Express and Editors? Choice Snapseed (4 stars, $4.99), which are focused on editing. With CameraBag, you get to choose between filters, but that?s about all.

Spurs visit vulnerable City as title race heats up

By STEVE DOUGLAS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:05 p.m. ET Jan. 20, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Loaned out by Manchester City for the past 12 months, Emmanuel Adebayor will be denied the chance to show what the Premier League leaders are missing when his new club Tottenham visits the Etihad Stadium for a key match in the title race on Sunday.

The restrictions of Adebayor's season-long loan move to Spurs prevent him from facing City, robbing them of their attacking spearhead for arguably their biggest game of the season.

The Togo striker has become a crowd favorite at White Hart Lane, scoring a team-high nine league goals to justify Harry Redknapp's controversial decision to bring in a player who turned out for the team's fierce rival Arsenal from 2006-09.

His situation at City couldn't have been more different, dropping down the pecking order soon after his 25 million pounds move from Arsenal and quickly out of favor with manager Roberto Mancini. He was farmed out to Real Madrid for the second half of last season.

"Sometimes it's possible that you have a situation like this - you have good players but he wants to play always and this is difficult in a top team," Mancini said. "If you have one striker who needs to play always it is not easy.

"I am happy for Manu because he is playing very well for Tottenham."

City has key players missing themselves as the team looks to extend its perfect home record to 11 league matches.

Captain Vincent Kompany serves the third match of his four-game suspension and key midfielder Yaya Toure is at the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast, along with his brother and fellow City player Kolo.

Striker Mario Balotelli and right back Micah Richards return from injury but City has been lacking the class and verve that saw them take the league by storm in the first few months of the season, including a 5-1 win at Spurs in August.

Once a match between two perennial underachievers in the English game - neither side has won the league since the 1960s - City-Tottenham has suddenly taken on a much bigger profile.

"They are not invincible," Redknapp said. "I think we can win. We will go there as a positive team. I wouldn't want to go there and sit back.

"We have people who can hurt them."

In what is the most crucial weekend in the title race so far, second-place Manchester United will also look to keep the pressure on City when it travels to fifth-place Arsenal on Sunday.

United is three points behind its neighbor as the team bids to extend its record haul of titles to 20 but for Arsenal, qualification for the Champions League is the priority this season.

Arsene Wenger's team could drop seven points off the top four if it loses to United and fourth-place Chelsea wins at Norwich on Saturday.

"I still think that when we have everybody available we are a strong force in this league," Wenger said. "That's why it is important that we fight very hard not to drop points."

Arsenal, though, has lost its last two matches - to Fulham and Swansea - and is still without a fit full back, although central defender Thomas Vermaelen could return from a calf injury. Thierry Henry, hoping to feature in his third match since joining on a two-month loan for a second spell at Arsenal, will have a fitness test on a calf injury.

United, which thrashed Arsenal 8-2 at Old Trafford in the first match between the teams this season, is set to welcome back England defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones from minor injuries.

The rest of the matches come on Saturday, when defender Gary Cahill could make his debut for Chelsea at Carrow Road following his move from Bolton.

Sixth-place Newcastle visits Fulham and Liverpool travels to next-to-last Bolton.

Mark Hughes takes charge of his first home league match at third-bottom Queens Park Rangers when Wigan visits in a key match in the relegation battle.

Also Saturday, it's Everton vs. Blackburn, Stoke City vs. West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland vs. Swansea and Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Aston Villa.

Kodak gets 2013 deadline to reorganize (AP)

ROCHESTER, N.Y. ? Eastman Kodak Co. has a little over a year to reshape its money-losing businesses and deliver a get-out-of-bankruptcy plan.

Girded by a $950 million financing deal with Citigroup Inc., the photography pioneer aims to keep operating normally during bankruptcy while it peddles a trove of digital-imaging patents.

After years of mammoth cost-cutting and turnaround efforts, Kodak ran short of cash and sought protection from its creditors Thursday. It is required under its bankruptcy financing terms to produce a reorganization plan by Feb. 15, 2013.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Allan Gropper in New York gave Kodak permission to borrow an initial $650 million from Citigroup.

He also set a June 30 deadline for Kodak to seek his approval of bidding procedures for the sale of 1,100 patents that analysts estimate could fetch at least $2 billion. No buyers have emerged since Kodak started shopping them around in July.

Through negotiations and lawsuits, Kodak has already collected $1.9 billion in patent licensing fees and royalties since 2008. Last week, it intensified efforts to defend its intellectual property by filing patent-infringement lawsuits against Apple Inc., HTC Corp., Samsung Electronics and Fujifilm Corp.

Kodak is also pursuing another high-stakes dispute before the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C., against Apple and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. over image-preview technology it patented in 2002.

Kodak has said it hopes to garner $1 billion from the two-year-old claim. But the commission, a U.S. arbiter for trade disputes, recently put off its decision until September.

Founded by George Eastman in 1880, Kodak turned photography into a mass commodity at the dawn of the 20th century and was known all over the world for its Brownie and Instamatic cameras and its yellow-and-red film boxes. It was brought down first by Japanese competition and then an inability to keep pace with the shift from film to digital technology.

"They're a company that knows more about imaging than anyone else in the world," said Robert Burley, a photography professor at Ryerson University in Toronto. "But I think they lost their ability in their corporate structure to turn those innovations into real-world applications and get them on the market fast.

"There were just too many fronts to deal with, too many battles all at the same time."

In its Chapter 11 filing, Kodak said its nearly decade-long overhaul has been undermined since 2008 by a sluggish economy and high restructuring costs. Its payroll has plunged below 19,000 from 70,000 in 2002, and it hasn't had a profitable year since 2007.

"At the same time as we have created our digital business, we have also already effectively exited certain traditional operations, closing 13 manufacturing plants and 130 processing labs, and reducing our workforce by 47,000 since 2003," CEO Antonio Perez said.

"Now we must complete the transformation by further addressing our cost structure and effectively monetizing non-core (intellectual-property) assets," Perez said in a statement.

Kodak's stock edged up to 32 cents in over-the-counter trading Friday afternoon. The bankruptcy filing prompted the New York Stock Exchange to delist the securities.
