Fugitive wanted over 1993 British heist arrested in Missouri (Reuters)

KANSAS CITY, Mo (Reuters) ? Missouri authorities have arrested a man wanted in the United Kingdom over a 1993 heist from an armored vehicle that netted the equivalent of $1.6 million, and were holding him on a weapons charge.

Edward John Maher, wanted for stealing "a large amount of cash" while working as a security guard, admitted to the FBI that he came to the United States in 1998 to work, the FBI said in an affidavit.

British authorities were seeking approval to have Maher extradited, according to a posting on Friday on the website of the Suffolk Constabulary.

British police had been looking for Maher, who had been living under his brother's name, for 19 years in connection with a heist of a million British pounds from an armored transport van in Felixstowe, England.

Maher's whereabouts came to light earlier this week when he went to a police station in Nixa, Missouri, to post bond for his son, the FBI said. While there, Maher filed a complaint accusing his son's wife of stealing a gun from him.

Police in Ozark, Missouri, where Maher lived, had received information that he was wanted in England, the FBI said. Maher was put under surveillance Tuesday and Wednesday.

Upon interviewing Maher's wife, investigators were told of his true identity and that he owned several guns. Maher was questioned at his home on Wednesday and taken into custody, without resistance to determine his immigration status, the FBI said.

Under further questioning, Maher, 56, admitted using his brother Michael's name because he was wanted for a crime in England, the FBI said. He acknowledged owning two pistols and two rifles and was charged with being an illegal immigrant in possession of firearms.

Obama shift seeks to defuse birth-control fight (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? President Barack Obama, in an abrupt policy shift aimed at quelling an election-year firestorm, announced on Friday that religious employers would not be required to offer free birth control to workers and the onus would instead be put on insurers.

But Catholic Church leaders and Obama's Republican opponents, who had railed against the Democratic president's new rule on contraceptives as a violation of religious freedom, signaled that divisions remain over the hot-button social issue.

The compromise by the Obama administration sought to accommodate religious organizations, such as Catholic hospitals and universities, outraged by a new rule that would have required them to offer free contraceptive coverage to women employees.

Instead, the new approach puts the burden on insurance companies, ordering them to provide workers at religious-affiliated institutions with free family planning if they request it, without involving their employer at all, the White House said.

"Religious liberty will be protected, and a law that requires free preventive care will not discriminate against women," Obama told reporters in the White House briefing room as he sought to put the political furor to rest.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops called Obama's move a "first step in the right direction" but said it was still concerned about the issue and would reserve judgment.

Weighing in publicly on the issue for the first time, Obama acknowledged that religious groups had "genuine concerns" about the birth control rule, but he accused some of his opponents of a cynical effort to turn the issue into a "political football."

"The result will be that religious organizations won't have to pay for these services," Obama said. "But women who work at these institutions will have access to free contraceptives just like other women."

The rule had sparked an outcry not only from Catholic leaders but from social conservatives, including Republican presidential hopefuls on the campaign trail, and had also sown dissent among some of Obama's top advisers.

Health insurance giant Aetna Inc said it would comply with the policy but needed "to study the mechanics of this unprecedented decision before we can understand how it will be implemented and how it will impact our customers."

Republicans seized on the issue, seeing a chance to paint Obama as anti-religion and put him on the defensive as signs of economic recovery appear to have re-energized his re-election bid.

The policy shift was aimed at preventing the issue from becoming a liability for Obama with Catholic voters, while at the same time trying not to anger his liberal base.

Washington, Feb 8 (ANI): A botanical formula considerably suppresses tumour growth in aggressive, hormone refractory (androgen independent) human-prostate cancer cells, according to researchers.

Scientists at Indiana University, Methodist Research Institute study a botanical formula that kills aggressive prostate cancer tumours. Their findings are based on experiments in mice using a human prostate cancer tumour model.

This is the third published study from a major university to show significant results of this specific multi-nutrient prostate formula against the invasive behaviour of aggressive prostate cancer cells, tumour growth and metastasis.

The formula combines botanical extracts, phytonutrients, botanically-enhanced medicinal mushrooms, and antioxidants.

"Multiple studies demonstrate that this prostate formula is a possible treatment for hormone refractory (androgen independent) prostate cancer," said lead researcher, Dr. Daniel Sliva.

This study also analyzed the formula for potential toxicity, demonstrating it to be safe with no signs of toxicity at the highest dosages.

"This study is a milestone in the research of this formula, demonstrating its safety and effectiveness in treating human prostate cancer in an animal model," said researcher and formulator, Dr. Isaac Eliaz.

These positive results offer a significant contribution to the field of prostate cancer research, and add to the growing body of published data substantiating the role of natural compounds in the treatment of prostate cancer."

Results of the study show that the oral administration of the formula produced a statistically significant 27 percent suppression of tumour growth, compared to controls.

The study was performed using a xenograft tumor model of human prostate cancer in mice.

Even more important, in addition to significant reduction in tumour volume, results showed inhibition of the expression of several genes involved in cancer proliferation and metastasis.

Three prostate cancer-related genes (IGF2, NRNF2 and PLAU/uPA) that were suppressed by this formula not only control aggressive prostate tumor growth, but also relate to the metastatic potential.

It is metastasis that makes prostate cancer deadly. The formula also significantly increased the expression of a gene that fights against prostate cancer, CDKN1A, which works by specifically inhibiting other cancer promoting cellular mechanisms.

By suppressing specific genes related to aggressive prostate cancer growth and proliferation, and increasing the expression of cancer-fighting genes, this integrative formula demonstrated multiple anti-cancer mechanisms and genetic targets.

This pre-clinical in vivo study confirms previously published in vitro data, which also shows the ability of this formula to decrease the expression of PLAU/uPA genes in aggressive, hormone-independent prostate cancer cells.

Astronaut Janice Voss dies in Arizona (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Former Astronaut Janice E. Voss, one of the few women launched into space, has died of breast cancer in Arizona, her alma mater said on Tuesday.

Voss, 55, died on Monday in Scottsdale, Ariz., where she was receiving treatment, Purdue University said in a news release.

She had logged five space flights with NASA, spending a total of 49 days in orbit and traveling 18.8 million miles in 779 laps of the Earth.

Born in South Bend, Indiana, Voss earned her bachelor's degree in engineering science at Purdue and then gained a doctorate in aeronautics and astronautics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

She became an astronaut in 1991, blasting into space for the first time two years later. She took part in space missions in 1995, two in 1997 and the last in 2000.

Her final mission was an 11-day flight during which the international crew aboard shuttle Endeavour mapped more than 47 million square miles of the Earth's land surface.

After her final space mission, Voss continued to work for NASA on payload issues, and used her cachet as an astronaut to encourage students to study science and math.

Plans for a memorial service are pending.
